Book a Psychology Appointment Today

We all experience periods of stress, anxiety, grief, conflict, and other forms of emotional distress during our lives. Most of the time, we're able to bounce back. Sometimes, we might need a little extra help to do so. Our team of highly experienced psychologists are ready to help you get back to your best self.

Rebates

Medicare rebates

You can access a rebate from Medicare if you obtain a referral from a private treating consultant psychiatrist or paediatrician or a mental health care plan (MHCP) from your GP. A mental health care plan provides rebates for up to ten psychology sessions per calendar year. Medicare rebates range from $98.95 (psychologist) to $145.25 (clinical psychologist).

Please note that Mindstate Psychology is a private psychology practice and does not routinely accept bulk-billed patients. Clients will be required to pay the fees for the service at the conclusion of the appointment. Under the Better Access Initiative, Medicare will rebate a portion of the fee. However, you will still be out of pocket due to a gap fee.

Mindstate Psychology will process the Medicare rebate on your behalf if payment is made in full on the day of the appointment.

Private health insurance rebates

If you have a private health insurance policy with ancillary (extras) cover, you may be covered for clinical psychology. Contact your insurer to check if you are covered, if any waiting periods need to be served and what rebate you can expect. Rebates are generally between $40.00 to $70.00 per session.

Workers compensation, motor vehicle accident insurance or employee assistance programs (EAPs)

In some cases clinical psychology may be covered by workers compensation, motor vehicle accident insurance or another organisation (such as through an employee assistance program). Please contact your provider to check if you are covered. If you have a pending or approved claim, one of our psychologists can contact your provider to ascertain how many sessions you are entitled to.

NDIS or DVA rebates

Some of our therapists will see people under NDIS or DVA. Contact us for more information.

Group Therapy Fees and Rebates

Mindstate Psychology offers group therapy programs to provide high-intensity alternative treatments for a select range of psychological conditions.

Medicare Rebates for Group Therapy

  • Medicare rebates are only eligible for the psychological treatment of approved mental health disorders. Not all group therapy programs treat conditions eligible under the Medicare scheme. As such, not all programs are eligible for Medicare rebates.
  • It is your responsibility to ensure your program is eligible. It is displayed in the 'at a glance' section. If you are unsure, please contact our reception.
  • Medicare referrals are only valid for up to 10 sessions. If a program has more than ten sessions, you may not be eligible for a rebate for every session. Please note that it is per session, not per week - if a program lasts for 20 weeks but only meets fortnightly for each session, every session will be covered by Medicare.
  • Please note that your referral should be specifically for a group therapy program - this is different to a GP mental healthcare referral.
  • You can receive a Medicare rebate for both group therapy programs and individual counselling in the same calendar year.

Fees for Group Therapy

  • Fees for each program are as advertised in the 'at a glance' section.
  • Group therapy fees can be either paid upfront or session by session.
  • If you are paying for each session individually, you must pay at the time of appointment. Failure to do so will impact your eligibility to attend future sessions for that program.

Frequently Asked Questions about Psychology Fees

Do I pay before or after my session?

Payment is due at the end of each session, preferably on the day of your appointment. We need to receive the payment in full before we can process your Medicare rebate. For telehealth sessions, payment must be made within 24 hours of your session. You can pay online, over the phone, or via bank transfer.

What happens if I need to cancel or reschedule?

We require 24 hours' notice for cancellations or rescheduling. If you cancel with less than 24 hours' notice, a 50% cancellation fee applies for psychological therapy sessions. We understand that emergencies happen, but late cancellations prevent us from offering that appointment time to another client who may need it.

How do I get a Mental Health Care Plan from my GP?

To access Medicare rebates for psychology sessions, you'll need to book an appointment with your GP and discuss your mental health concerns. Your GP will assess whether a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) is appropriate for you.

If they determine you would benefit from psychological support, they'll create the plan and provide you with a referral. This referral allows you to access up to 10 rebated psychology sessions per calendar year under the Better Access Initiative.

Why is the rebate different for a psychologist and clinical psychologist?

Medicare provides different rebate amounts depending on the psychologist's qualifications and registration. Clinical psychologists have completed additional postgraduate training and specialist endorsement, which is reflected in a higher Medicare rebate. Importantly, while clinical psychologists have a higher rebate, they also charge higher fees - so the out-of-pocket (or gap payment) is very similar.

Both types of psychologists provide high-quality evidence-based care. The choice between them often depends on your specific needs and preferences.

When do my 10 Medicare sessions reset every year or financial year?

Medicare sessions reset every calendar year (1 January to 31 December), not the financial year. This means if you use all 10 sessions in 2025, you'll be eligible for another 10 sessions from 1 January 2026. Medicare sessions do not roll over. You are only eligible for 10 sessions each year, regardless of what you used last year.

Can I use Medicare rebates for telehealth/online sessions?

Yes! Medicare rebates apply to telehealth sessions in exactly the same way as in-person appointments, provided you have a valid referral. The session fee and rebate amount remain the same. Learn more about our telehealth psychology services.

What if I've already used my 10 sessions this year?

If you've used all 10 Medicare-rebated sessions in the current calendar year, you have several options:

  • Pay the full fee without a Medicare rebate until the next calendar year begins
  • Use your private health insurance if you have ancillary (extras) cover for clinical psychology
  • Check if you're eligible for an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) through your workplace. Mindstate Psychology accepts EAPs from St John WA, and the Department of Defence for active ADF personnel. Your workplace may fund your Mindstate Psychology sessions, but you will need to discuss any arrangements with them. Note that EAPs have their own session limits and approval processes.
  • Reduce session frequency and wait until your Medicare sessions reset in January

Your psychologist can discuss these options with you and help you decide what works best for your situation and budget.

Why is there a gap fee when I have a Medicare rebate?

Mindstate Psychology is a private psychology practice, which means we set our fees based on the expertise, experience, and quality of care our psychologists provide. The Medicare rebate covers a portion of the session cost, but doesn't cover the full fee. Bulk billing practices charge only the Medicare rebate amount with no gap fee, but private practices like ours often have longer session times, more flexible appointment availability, and highly experienced practitioners. The gap fee reflects this additional value and allows us to maintain the high standard of care we provide.

Do you offer concession rates for students, pensioners, or financial hardship?

We don't currently offer reduced rates for students or pensioners. However, we encourage you to:

  • Check if you're eligible for Medicare rebates (which reduce the out-of-pocket cost)
  • Contact your private health insurer to see what rebate you can claim
  • Ask your employer if they offer an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) that covers psychology sessions

If you're experiencing financial difficulty and are concerned about affording ongoing therapy, please speak with our reception team or your psychologist. We can discuss your options and help you find a sustainable approach to your mental health care.
