How do I book my first Psychologist Appointment?

You don't need anything to book a psychologist appointment in Perth. All you need to do is contact us, let us know who you want to see and make an appointment. More information about our practitioners is available on our team page. If you need help deciding who you should see, our supportive reception team can help you.

It is important to note that to access Medicare rebates, you must obtain a referral letter from a private treating consultant psychiatrist, a consultant paediatrician, or a mental health care plan (MHCP) from your GP. These cannot be backdated, so it may be beneficial to see a GP before starting with Mindstate Psychology.

What happens during a Psychologist Appointment in Perth?

Generally, psychologist appointments in Perth have two main stages: an initial consultation and ongoing sessions. Here's a basic outline:

Initial Consultation

During the initial consultation appointment, you meet with your psychologist for the first time. The psychologist will create a comfortable and confidential environment to help you feel at ease. You'll discuss the reasons for seeking help, your symptoms, and your goals for therapy.

The psychologist may conduct a mental health assessment to understand your emotional, psychological, and social well-being. The psychologist may also screen for particular psychological issues. Based on the assessment, the psychologist will discuss potential treatment options and develop a personalised plan.

During this first session, it's also important to decide if your psychologist feels like a good fit for you. Not everyone works well together - and that's ok! But for any psychological interventions to be effective, you must feel comfortable opening up with your practitioner.

Ongoing Sessions

After the initial consultation and assessment, you'll continue to delve deeper into your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. Your psychologist may teach you coping strategies, problem-solving techniques, or a specific, evidence-based therapy, such as cognitive-behavioural therapy or EMDR.

You'll also regularly review your progress and adjust the treatment plan as needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some frequently asked questions about booking a Psychologist Appointment in Perth

How many Psychology Appointments will I need?

It is difficult to determine how many appointments you will need until you have had an initial consultation and begun treatment. Some clients completely resolve their issues in only a few sessions, however most clients require more (dependent upon the underlying issues and complexity).

Therapy sessions typically last 50 minutes, and with a GP mental heath care plan you can access up to 10 psychology sessions per calendar year through Medicare.

Do I need a referral to book a Psychologist Appointment in Perth?

You do not need a referral to book a psychologist appointment in Perth. However, to receive Medicare rebates, you must have a referral from a psychiatrist or paediatrician or a Mental Healthcare Plan from a GP. Please note that referrals cannot be backdated, so if you intend to claim Medicare rebates, you need to visit your GP before your first telehealth appointment.

How long is the waiting list for a Psychologist Appointment?

Many of our experienced psychologists do not have a waitlist, meaning we have appointments immediately available.

How much do Psychologist Appointments in Perth cost?

Fees for therapy will vary depending on the experience of the psychologist and when you see them. You may also be eligible for a rebate from Medicare (or another third-party provider), which will reduce out-of-pocket expenses.

Our Fees for Therapy page has a full list of fees and potential rebates for psychologist appointments.

Does Private Health Insurance pay for Psychologist Appointments in Perth?

Most private health insurance funds cover psychology appointments. However, it is dependent on your particular health insurer and the type of cover you have. It’s worth reviewing your policy if you think you may require mental health treatment.

What issues can a psychologist treat?

Psychologists can treat a wide range of mental health difficulties. This can include relationship issues, personality disorders, social anxiety and generalised anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, trauma and PTSD (e.g., from a traumatic experience like a natural disaster), relationship issues and other mental health disorders.

Clinical Psychology Appointments

Clinical psychology is a specialty of psychology that provides psychologists with specific training on treating and assessing mental health conditions. With a wealth of experience and a keen interest in mental health issues, clinical psychologists can diagnose and treat complex conditions such as anxiety, depression, trauma, PTSD, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), eating disorders and more.
