Starting Psychological Therapy.

How do I get started with therapy?

You don’t need anything to start seeing a psychologist at Mindstate Psychology. All you need to do is contact us, let us know who you would like to see and make an appointment. More information about our practitioners is available here. If you're not sure who you should see, our supportive reception team can help you.
It is important to note that to access Medicare rebates, you must obtain a referral from a private treating consultant psychiatrist, a consultant paediatrician, or a mental health care plan (MHCP) from your GP. These cannot be backdated, so it may be beneficial to see a GP prior to starting with Mindstate Psychology.

1. Get a referral

While not required, many people begin their therapy journey with a visit to their doctor. In order to get Medicare rebates, you need a referral from a psychiatrist, paediatrician or a mental health care plan from a GP.

2. Book an appointment

Once you are ready to begin therapy, you can contact our office and book an appointment with a practitioner. If you're not sure who you should see, our supportive reception team can help you.

3. Your first session

Once you have booked an appointment, we will send you an information and privacy form. This form helps you understand the therapy process and must be signed prior to your first appointment - you can even sign it digitally!

How many sessions will I need?

It is difficult to determine how many sessions you will need until you have had an initial consultation and begun treatment. Some clients completely resolve their issues in only a few sessions, however most clients require more (dependent upon the underlying issues and complexity). Therapy sessions typically last 50 minutes, and with a GP mental heath care plan you can access up to 12 psychology sessions per calendar year through Medicare.

How much will it cost?

Fees for therapy will vary depending on who you see and when you see them. You may also be eligible for a rebate from Medicare (or another third party provider), which will reduce the out-of-pocket expenses. A full list of fees and potential rebates is available on our Fees for Therapy page.
